I was thinking more about having been a carnivore for just about four years now. It's been a very interesting learning experience. I started with pork, eggs, and dairy, and learned that I do best with none of those! Then I tried beef, seafood, and finally found lamb and mutton, which works best for me. Goat also works very well me so far (a more recent addition).
Lamb and mutton have a great inherent fat to protein ratio in almost all cuts of the meat itself, so I don't have to eat the attached fat, which can cause digestive upset for my Crohn's. Then I can maintain ketosis easily!
Goat is a bit leaner, although I have found a great halal market that carries some nice fattier goat, and that also is working really nicely for me.
I have a friend in a local sheep rancher who sells me her older ewes and rams at a discount (since everyone usually wants lamb). I have been able to get 100% local, grassfed mutton for just $3/lb that way, which is wonderful!
I don't eat any spices, and stopped using salt over a year ago (wow it's been that long!). I just drink water, sometimes plain seltzer water, or hot water. And some very small amounts of diluted vodka. That's it! No other foods or drink.
I don't take any supplements, and no medications, don't see a doctor, and just visit the dentist for twice yearly cleanings. Once a year I have been getting CT (heart) or CIMT (cardiovascular) scans since I have familial hypercholesterolemia, but for the last three years the scores have all been excellent, so I might stop bothering with that too.
I've recently started doing stand-up tanning sessions to get some extra vitamin D in the winter. I think it is a good idea, since I have a lot of the potential risks for osteoporosis: older, Caucasian, Northern latitude which is cloudy all winter, small-boned, underweight, don't do much heavy lifting. It feels good to do it, and I think it might be helping my mood too!
My life has really improved. Eating, cooking, cleanup, and grocery shopping are super easy now. My digestion is very good (knock on wood!). My mood is good. I don't have menstrual pain and don't get headaches or muscle cramps. I sleep well.
My cat has been zero-carb for over a year now too. He's doing so much better, really getting into mousing, he's more social and friendly, and he's so nice and trim now! The vet won't recognize him when it comes time for his vaccines in a few weeks.
