Zero Carb Keto: Buying Meat Without Plastic

Buying Meat Without Plastic

I have been sharing my mission here the past few weeks to go zero waste and plastic free. I am really happy with my new life! And now the last few stumbling blocks have been solved!

One stumbling block was what to use for moisturizer that did not come in plastic. I looked high and low, tried a few alternatives, but in the end I think I have decided to forgo moisturizer altogether! I think it is the "Chapstick effect" of your body becoming basically addicted to the Chapstick or moisturizer. So you have to give some time to get off of them, then your body adjusts. My hands were really dry for about a week, but now they are normal again! I also am using less soap and patting them dry gently too, which really makes a difference.

The only other stumbling block was how to get my meat without plastic? This was really a conundrum. I had thought freezer paper was an alternative, but it is coated in plastic.

However, I have come up with two alternatives!

One alternative is to bring your own container to the butcher counter. It depends on the shop, but some will allow you to use your own container or bag. I ordered some BioBag food storage bags and had my first successful purchase with at my local meat/fish counter. They did use a piece of waxed parchment, which is apparently also non-compostable, so this route may not be a perfect alternative.

The other alternative is canned meat. I found a nearby grassfed beef rancher who sells canned beef! It is 100% grassfed, contains only beef and salt, and the cans do not have BPA. So I ordered a case. It is even a great price too! I will report back on the flavor once I have had a chance to try it. They said there is no plastic used in the shipping packaging either. Great! And how perfect for traveling! And the steel cans can just be recycled! My only concern is that it likely will not be fatty enough.

I am just so happy with some of my other alternatives too. Hibiscus and fenugreek powder for my hair instead of shampoo has been life changing! And The Keeper menstrual cup too. And eyeglasses instead of contacts. And switching to just natural fibers for clothes and linens. And having freed myself of supplements, pharmaceuticals, even glucose and ketone testing strips. Such an improvement in my life! I am so happy and comfortable in my own skin, literally!

I also thought it might be fun to share my bodyfat chart over time showing the effects of a high-fat, zero carb diet for two years. It is below!

I read a wonderful quote this morning from Indigenous Canadian Art Napoleon, that I wanted to share:
"The forest is our supermarket, it's our drugstore, it's our church."

  1. Wow! such amazing results on your body fat %. I am so impressed with all the positive changes you have made to eliminate plastics. You are such a great example. I would like to know more about the canned grassfed beef. Do they only sell local or can I buy some? Do they have a website? Please let me know if you like the taste? If it is tastey and a good price I may be interested. Thanks Mellie!
