To me,
fasting glucose is an important signal. If it is under 70 mg/dl (3.9mmol/l), then all is well! Ketones should be kicked in, and inflammation should be low too. I've noticed that even foods that shouldn't have carbs can cause my fasting glucose to be higher. Poultry and pork seem to do it. And dairy! Sometimes also the timing of meals can affect fasting glucose. Leaving at least five hours between all meals can also improve the next morning's glucose reading!
Another important signal to me is blood pressure. Mine is normally low, around 100/70. If it goes higher, then I know that something I am eating is probably causing inflammation. For me, dairy and eggs seem to cause it to be much higher.
Another signal is muscle cramping. I get muscle cramps, especially foot cramps, if I throw off my electrolyte balance. This usually means I need to eat more salt! It happened all the time when I would eat plants! Along with this is a feeling of heaviness in the legs. That again usually means I need more salt!
Headaches are another important signal. Strangely, I get headaches from foods that are high in calcium. So despite what the nutrition guidelines say, I actually have to avoid high calcium foods!
Bodyfat percentage will also seem to increase depending on inflammation. This ties in with ankle swelling too!
I am very aware of my body's signals and have learned to pay attention to them. They really seem to be an easy, noninvasive way to direct my health!
