I read an article today about how ketosis can bring about the same feelings of euphoria (from the Greek: "well-bearing") that recreational drugs bring! The theory is that BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate, one of the ketone bodies produced in ketosis) is extremely similar to GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, recreational drug used to stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain).
I would definitely agree that ketosis does bring about a feeling a well-being. Besides a few bad days here and there, which is inevitable in life, over the many years that I have been in ketosis, I feel like I have been in a general state of well-being. That I am riding an "even keel", so to speak: "Balanced, as a ship is floating on its designated waterline and the keel is horizontal; by extension, to have a calm even disposition."
I feel like I can take on challenges and stresses better than I could when I was eating carbs. It probably helps that I don't have all of the problems that I had before when eating plant matter and carbs, such as foot and calf cramping, menstrual cramping, headaches, tendinitis, irritability, near-constant hunger, gut bloating, gut pain, etc.
I feel much more at ease. And I think that is the original meaning of euphoria, in the Greek root sense of the word. Not a "high", or extreme pleasure, that we associate with the word euphoria nowadays, but riding on an even keel!
