I was reading about the supposed inflammatory sugar found in the meats of mammals called Neu5gc. The theory is that since humans produce Neu5ac instead, that our bodies think Neu5gc is an invader and we have an inflammatory response. Then that inflammatory response can lead to worse problems such as cancer.
So some doctors are advising against eating mammalian meat, based on this theory.
However, I disagree. For one, how could something that our species has eaten for 150,000 years before agriculture be something we are supposed to avoid?
Also, as I've said about cholesterol theories, it comes down to theories versus reality. The theories tell me that having high LDL is supposedly terribly high risk for atherosclerosis and heart disease. However, when I got a heart CT scan and tri-vascular scan, I got perfect scores, despite super high LDL So the theory didn't hold in the face of reality.
I think the same thing is happening with this Neu5gc theory. If eating mammalian meat is such a high risk for inflammation, then you'd think after I ate nothing but mammalian meat for a year solid that my markers of inflammation would be super high. But my hs-CRP (often used as a marker for inflammation) and complete blood count numbers were all exceptionally good! Also simple signals of inflammation such as joint pain, swollen ankles, etc., would be present. But they aren't. So I just don't think this theory holds up to reality either!
And we have to remember that these are all actually just
theories!
