I was lucky enough to be able to order two whole lamb shares and they are now processed and ready for pickup on Saturday. I was even able to get them wrapped in paper rather than plastic, which is great!
I had watched a documentary the other night called "Plastic Paradise," in which Angela Sun travels to Midway Atoll and shows all of the plastic washed up ashore there:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2277946/ It really hit home to me that all of the plastic waste we "throw out" never actually goes away. It just gets moved around! So basically, when we use plastic, it is around forever. I have decided to try and stop using plastics anymore, as much as possible, or at least use only recyclable plastics.
However, when I purchase my meats, they always come in plastic packaging. I checked with our local recycling center, and unfortunately, they said that those packs are not recyclable. That was really depressing!
But then I found a new local farmer who raises 100% grassfed lamb, and can actually have the meat wrapped in paper! So this is great!
Whole lamb shares are usually pretty affordable, and do not take up too much freezer space. One whole lamb share can fit in a regular American refrigerator freezer. I decided to go ahead and buy a small 5 cubic foot chest freezer as well, so I can stock up when I find multiple lamb shares available, or even buy a half side of beef if I ever decide to take the plunge on that! This freezer is small enough that it fits inside my small condo kitchen, so that helped me make the decision to do it.
I will try and capture some video and photos of the lamb share pickup to make a YouTube video over my vacation next week! Also, I have been working on a zero carb keto "cookbook", and my first copy is on its way to me. I am sure I will want to make some tweaks, but I will report when it is ready!
