Zero Carb Keto
Plastic Free Options
Since my recent mission to go plastic-free and zero waste, I have been pretty successful in finding great replacements for the plastic-y products in my life!
Except in one big area of my life: the meat!
I had asked for my lamb shares to be wrapped in paper, but then I discovered that freezer paper is lined in plastic. It will not biodegrade or compost.
Then I found that there are cellophane bags available online that are compostable. I found one local butcher shop that said they would wrap meat in it if I provided it.
However, it turns out the the cellophane bags are wrapped and shipped in plastic.
So now it seems there is no plastic-free alternative excepts canned fish, since the cans can be recycled. Or eggs, since my local farmers do reuse their cartons. But unfortunately, eggs seem to be inflammatory for me and really raise my triglycerides.
With my severe colitis, unfortunately, plant matter is still not an option. I don't know exactly what it is about plant matter that is problematic (there are many things it could be!), but it seems to be either fiber or fructans, and they are in all plant matter, basically. That would explain why even coconut cream eventually causes me gut issues, even though it is mostly fat.
So I guess it looks like canned fish. And I might try coconut oil (instead of coconut cream) in a glass jar with a metal lid for extra fat. I am leery though, since coconut is still a plant and could cause me gut issues. I had tried unrefined red palm oil and that caused me gut issues.
I think just some good fatty canned fish, such as mackerel, sardines, and salmon with skin, should not need any additional fat.
Canned fish is not as appealing as freshly roasted lamb, that's for sure! But luckily I enjoy fish, and really feel strongly about this issue, so I am willing to give it a try.
I have about one month left of meat. I might start incorporating these new items bit by bit to see how my gut reacts. I have emailed some canned fish vendors to see about getting plastic-free shipping.
Hopefully it will be a smooth transition!
I wanted to share a photo of my hair washed with Indian herbs instead of shampoo. I also wanted to update that marshmallow root infusion is working well now as a replacement for moisturizer and lip balm!

Wow. I can't believe you would give up lamb and beef and only eat canned fish. That is true dedication. I look forward to hearing more about it.
