Plant Toxins and Bloating

A few days ago I had ventured into eating some coconut cream for fat, since I was running low on fatty meat cuts and dairy does not work for me. I figured it might be OK since so many other keto followers use coconut.

However, I really should have known better. I just really do not tolerate plant matter at all very well.

There are a whole host of compounds in plant matter that the plant uses as self-defense. These serve to make the plants less digestible. And that is exactly what happens in my gut!

There are tannins, oxalates, phenols, lectins, fructans, galactans, fiber, even just fructose. All of these can cause gut issues, not just for humans but even for other animals as well.

What is frustrating is that it takes a day or even two for me to really feel the effects. I believe it is because the indigestible plant matter sits in my intestines or colon for that long, while my body tries to break it down unsuccessfully. It eventually ferments, causing bloating. I can actually see and feel the bloating way down on my torso, between my pelvic bones. That area is distended out a bit, rather than concave as it should be. When I push on it slightly, I notice it feels kind of like a blown-up balloon.

It is interesting because I can see that bloating in many other people as well, for example when I see photos of people in swimsuits. I suppose other people just do not feel the pain of the bloating as much I do, or they have built up a tolerance for it.

At any rate, it takes two or three days for me to rid myself of the toxins and get my gut back to normal! Which seems like forever! Lesson learned. Meat and fat only!
